Tutorial: Curving Petersham Ribbon
Petersham ribbon is specifically woven for hat makers so that it can be curved. It's essential to curve your petersham ribbon when going around the base of a crown as straight ribbons often leaves gaps at the top edge. Essentially we are expanding one side of the ribbon edge which will sit perfectly against the hat crown.
What you need:
-Petersham Ribbon (any size)
-Iron
How To:
Put your iron on a low-medium setting. With your hand pressed firmly on the iron use your other hand to slowly pull the ribbon at a 90 degree angle away from the iron. Continue to slowly pull on one edge of the ribbon until it has formed a ‘C’ shape.
Your ribbon should now sit perfectly against the hat crown! This technique is also valuable for making inner petersham head linings for hats and fascinators.
